The scheme comprised a rolling programme of redevelopment and refurbishment works on the Whitmore Estate, which provides a total of 517 homes. The final phase was completed in 2008. JCMT were involved from the earliest stages as key members of the team enabling Canalside Housing Partnership to win the support of local residents and central government to become a new social landlord under a stock transfer in 1997.
Central to the approach is the creation of secure, well-lit landscaped courtyards and gardens with clear boundaries between the public and private realm. A number of existing blocks have been demolished and replaced with family houses with gardens. Scale and massing reflect existing buildings whilst providing a modern vocabulary to complement the surroundings. All design proposals were based on extensive consultation with residents.
The project was shortlisted in 2005 for UK Housing Award for ‘Excellence in Delivering Regeneration’.
