Quebec Wharf is a Grade II listed building, built in 1878 for the North Metropolitan Tramways Company as a forage warehouse for horses. It was described as ‘the best remaining example of a canalside granary and probably the most distinctive relic of the nineteenth century horse tramway system of London’ (Hackney Society 1998).

The scheme involved converting the building into a mix of B1 studios and 20 live/work apartments. The approach was to retain original features where possible and to open up the centre of the deep plan building to form a new atrium, enabling insertion of dual aspect apartments and circulation spaces. These have exposed brickwork and rafters, sliding steel doors, hoisting equipment and original flooring retained wherever possible with bathrooms, kitchens, and gallery spaces treated as contemporary, free-standing interventions.

The scheme won an Evening Standard Hot Property Style Award. The judges applauded the ‘respectful and innovative’ conversion and ‘stunning design’.
