A mixed use, high density scheme on a group of brownfield sites (totalling approximately 1ha) around Kingsland Basin in Hackney comprising 207 apartments and approximately 6,500m2 of employment space (including health centre, artists’ studios and waterside cafe). The scheme is a flagship, housing-led regeneration project with emphasis on providing attractive workspace and apartments for both public and private residents whilst retaining and restoring a number of industrial buildings including two Grade 2 listed stable buildings.
New buildings are grouped around retained ones to form a series of new courtyards, or wharves, all of which open onto the historic canal basin. Central to the design is the new, extensive public access along the west side of the Basin. The resulting public realm will be of the highest standard and will provide generous amenity space in a variety of spaces linked to the waterside.
The scheme gained planning consent in summer 2009 and is due to start on site in the autumn.
